Crappy Run and Good Swim

Thursday 10.0 miles/1:29:12/8:55 average pace

Continuing with my week of skipped/shitty runs, yesterday's run sucked. I had a side stitch the ENTIRE time. I hoped it would go away, but it did not. I took walk breaks, I hydrated, I ran slow, I focused on my breathing, nothing.

I believe the problem was that my stomach was kind of weird all day, and just wasn't up to the jostling and sloshing that comes with running. In addition to being kinda crampy/gassy (sorry, too much information I know) to begin with, I decided this would be the day I will drink gatorade while running! I NEVER drink gatorade, because.... you guessed it...it gives me stomach problems. I guess I kinda forgot that. So I drank a few big gulps of straight gatorade before I started, then I carried a gatorade/water mix in my bottle, and drank it while I ran.

After my sixth sucky mile, and seeing that I was way late to meet Zach at the gym (with all my walking breaks slowing me down), I decided "F#%@ this" and just jammed out the last three and a half miles. The side stitch hurt worse but at least it was over faster.

9:08
9:09
9:24
9:26
9:23
9:23
8:59 (let's get this over with)
8:05
8:19
7:50

I did arrive at the gym later than planned, so I only did a short upper body weights workout, plus abs, and stretched out good.

This morning I got up and went to the pool. I swam 10 laps =500 m in 15 minutes. I felt really relaxed the entire time and loved every second of it. I hardly rested at all!! I would have swam longer but I had to get to work. :(

When I take a deep breath, I can still feel a little twinge where my side stitch was yesterday. It better be gone tomorrow. I can't wait to get this week over with and start fresh next week. I need to be pumped up for Boston! At least if I had to have a "bad week" I got it over with now. I am getting SO excited for Boston. The list making has begun, the weather-checking is underway, I even have different lists for different weather. Weeeee!

Tempo Run and PR Swim!

Tuesday 8.5 miles/1:11:29/8:25 average pace

This run started off real rough. It made me acknowledge that running 20 (.25 hehe) miles is kind of a big deal and the legs won't let you forget it. This run also made me feel good about my decision to take Monday off and recover. Man, I was sore. I can't even describe the feeling, but for the first three miles of the run both of my legs felt really really just BLECH. Painful. I'm having a hard time articulating the feeling... They weren't just heavy. They weren't exactly sore. Tight is good... but not quite. Tired, but not just tired. You know the feeling when you've been running on concrete too much? And your legs are tight and the motion just feels really jarring and uncomfortable? That's how I felt. (and it didn't help that this run is entirely concrete). Only it wasn't just my shins (which are often tight) but my knees, my thighs, even my back. Just blech. I felt like I was kind of hobbling. I was definitely grimacing. I was NOT running fast. I didn't see how I would be able to do a fast workout.

Luckily, after hobbling and grimacing for about a half hour, the skies cleared. My legs totally loosened up. It felt like that scene in Forrest Gump when he's running along in his leg braces, then the braces break off and he's flying. That was me. :)

warm up 2 miles

9:21 (ugh)
9:02 (uuuuuuuuuuuugh)

LT 4 miles

8:03 (started loosening up, but still surprised at how fast that was)

7:40 (braces off)

7:47 (feeling strong)

7:32 (weeeeeee!)

cool down 2.5 miles

8:52
8:48
(I forgot to write down that last split)

I felt a million times better after I finished. I'm not sore at all today.

This morning I got up and went swimming. It was a personal training record for me! I was finally able to swim my 20 laps = 1000 meters in 30 minutes! Chatty Guy was no where to be seen, and I was on a limited schedule since I had to get to work, so I didn't dilly-dally. I swam. Back and forth! Like a pro! :P I really did rest a lot less than previous times and I did great! It was so fun. I think I need to get a watch to swim with, so that I can time my workouts more accurately than I have been. I just look at what time it is when I get in and out of the pool.

Week 3 Schedule - Taper Time

I am glad I didn't post this yesterday, because I ended up skipping my run last night. It just didn't happen. Among my excuses: it was pouring rain, it was monday, and I am tapering. Oh, and my left leg has been a little sore. And Maritza was going to run with me but had an appointment. So, ya, didn't run. I like how I didn't take a single day off (running or cross training) for like three weeks, then I take two days in a row. Logical timing though- right after my 20 mile run. Anyway, I'm back on track for the week:

Monday: rest (hehe)

Tuesday: 8 miles w/ 4 at LT pace (+ upper body and core ST)

Wednesday: (swim)

Thursday: 10 miles (+ upper body and core ST)

Friday: (swim)

Saturday: 16 miles

Sunday: (swim)

TOTAL miles scheduled for taper week one: 34

20.25 miles and Week 4 Summary

Saturday 20.25 miles/3:05:31/9:10 average pace

I continued my tradition of running my 20 miler on the Los Gatos Creek Trail in the south bay- from San Jose to the Lexington Reservoir south of Los Gatos. I've run this 20 mile out-and-back course every time I've trained for a marathon, making this my fourth time. It wasn't my fastest 20 miler ever, but I felt great and ran a strong negative split. I started off a little slow, and I was feeling kind of sluggish, but I figured that would go away after a few miles as usual. It did. The run generally felt really easy. I was never too hot, too thirsty, or felt like I was working too hard. I enjoyed myself and took it easy and got through it no problem. I slightly miscalculated my distance and was still a ways from my car when I hit the 20 mile mark, so I just kept running, an additional quarter mile, to get there (I was meeting my brother and sister in law for lunch anyway, and was running a little late). I have NEVER felt good enough to tack extra distance onto a 20 miler just for the hell of it. It's especially cool because I ran that last mile (mile 20) in 8:16, then ran the last quarter mile in 2:00 even (8:00 pace). :)

Ok, I got curious and looked back to my previous 20 milers, and am pretty impressed with my consistency! Here's my 20 mile training run history. I've adjusted any runs longer than 20 (like this week) so we're looking at the 20 mile times for all runs:

Boston Training:

March 24 2007: 3:03:31 (9:11 pace)

CIM Training:

November 11 2006 3:02:41 (9:08 pace)

October 28 2006 3:05:54 (9:16 pace)

Ave Training:

April 15 2006 3:03:55 (9:12 pace)

April 1 2006 3:03:29 (9:11 pace)

(no data on hand for Nike Training, but it was much slower as it was the first time I'd ever run the distance!)

Anyway, that's pretty interesting stuff. The time is almost identical, but the effort is dramatically different. This weekend I felt fine throughout the run, then recovered super quick and feel great today.

The weather was beautiful and there were tons of people on the trail keeping me company. It was fun. :) I won't post my splits but here's a summary:

First 10 miles: 1:34:19 (9:26 average pace)

Last 10.25 miles: 1:31:03 (8:53 average pace)

I finished super strong:

(after running about 9:00 for several miles...)

mile 18 8:48
mile 19 8:38
mile 20 8:16
.25 2:00 (8:00 pace)

I did not go swimming yesterday (Sunday) but we did walk to the library and back for a total of about 3 miles, and played frisbee in the park for an hour.

TOTAL miles for week 4: 45.25

PLUS: 2x swimming for a total of 1500 m
2x weights (upper body and core)

Swim, Run, Lift, Swim

Thursday 11.0 miles/1:37:26/8:52 average pace

I'll come back to that...

I have an insane amount of stuff to log here even though I posted day before yesterday. I don't feel like I'm training a ton... I mean, sure I'm busy, but I'm not really wore out or anything. But things like this (posting 4 workouts for 2 days) make me feel like a freak! Also making me feel like a freak: I ran into a girl I know at the gym (I had just arrived after running the 11 miles) and she thought I was crazy for running to the gym from my house and then lifting weights. So I didn't tell her I'd actually ran 5 miles beyond the gym and back... I'm so glad to have my blog and Running Forum friends to make me feel normal. :D

Ok so in order:

Wednesday night swim: 20 laps = 1000 meters. A great swim! I was feeling so good, and I was hardly needing to rest between laps. The only downer was that braggy/chatty guy was back (we shared a lane) and he proceeded to not only chat too damn much (ya, he's nice enough but I'm kinda in the middle of something), but offer me a ton of unsolicited instruction. It was good advice, and I said thank you, but how about shutting the hell up already. So, besides those interruptions, a good swim. I feel like I could have finished the workout in less than my usual 35 minutes, but alas, I did not.

Thursday: Medium Long run (see top of post). Felt SO good! It wasn't too hot like last week, I was cruising along at an easy pace and just felt great. :) And the best part is I ran in my new Running SKIRT! I actually went to purchase some new shorts, and tried on a dozen pair at least, and the skirt won out. It's so cute and comfy. :)

(splits: 8:47 8:54 9:07 9:12 9:02 9:01 8:58 8:48 8:49 8:35 8:06)

After the run, I did a 45 minute upper body lift with Zach. Biceps and back. I was tired so I didn't work too hard.

Friday: I got up this morning and went swimming- 10 laps = 500 m. I purposely didn't share a lane with chatty guy, but he was adjacent and managed to chat anyway. If anything, this guy is getting me to stop lingering at the end of the pool and keep swimming continuously. Ooooh I should learn to flip-turn. :D That would be perfect.

So that's my 4 workout catch-up. If I didn't have so much to blog about, I honestly wouldn't even realize how much I'm training. Well, I guess I have been aware of how much I'm eating, and that I'm still losing a little weight, but I feel fantastic. I wish I could keep this going for a couple more weeks, but I actually start my taper after this weekend. Bummer. Well, let's see how bummed I am after I run 20 miles tomorrow! :D

Real Speed Work

Tuesday 8.0 miles/1:06:04/8:16 average pace

I assigned myself a VO2 interval workout straight from my last Pfitz schedule, and I did it! I have been slacking on my speed work so it felt good to get this in.

2 miles warm up
8:47
8:37

4 X 1200 m (.75 miles) with .25 mile recoveries

Interval II- 5:17 (7:03 pace) 2:31 recovery
Interval I- 5:22 (7:09 pace) 2:23 recovery
Interval III- 5:31 (7:21 pace) 2:26 recovery
Interval IV- 5:20 (7:07 pace) 2:25 recovery

2 miles cool down
8:38
8:43

So, last time I did this I was faster, but I'm still pretty pleased. It was hard, but fun, and I'm glad I did it.

After finishing the run, we drove up to the gym for an hour of upper body weights (chest and shoulders) plus some core stuff. I'm getting used to these long evenings- I started my run at 5:00 and we didn't leave the gym till about 8:30. There's some hot tub time in there, but still.

Trail Adventure

Monday 6.0 miles/57:33/9:36 average pace

Zach and I ran on one of our favorite trails near Walnut Creek last night. The clouds had moved in and it was cooler (60's) but still beautiful. This run was pretty challenging with some big hills and tons of stream crossings- we crossed the little creek *14* times EACH way. Some crossings were more difficult than others but I am proud to say we stayed pretty dry. We charged up the hills -we even raced each other on a couple hills (of course I won :P). We turned around at the three mile mark (side note: my Garmin 205 never lost the signal, where my old 201 was completely useless on this trail!) and headed back down... and I mean DOWN. I didn't realize how much we were climbing until we were flying down the hills back toward the trailhead. I love 3 minute range in our pace! That really demonstrates how tough the run was. It was awesome.

That picture is an old one from a previous hike, but same area. There are lots of cows around- just like pretty much every open space/park in the east bay. I think they're kinda cute, except last night we came upon a bunch that were very near the trail (and this is when we were flying) and one cow got spooked and moved quickly (for a cow) which kinda freaked me out. Otherwise, cute.

Week 4 Schedule

4 Weeks to BOSTON!

Monday: 6 miles Trail Run w/ Zach (+ core/legs weights)

Tuesday: 8 miles w/ VO2 Intervals: 4x 1200 m (+ upper body/core weights)

Wednesday: (swim)

Thursday: 11 miles Medium Long (+ upper body/core weights)

Friday: (swim)

Saturday: 20 Long Run (+ giant cinnamon roll after)

Sunday: (swim + upper body/core weights)

TOTAL miles scheduled for my PEAK week: 45

I took Tuesday's Interval workout straight from my Pfitz plan for CIM for the corresponding week (4 weeks to go). I haven't really been following my current plan that closely, so I thought this would motivate me to really do it. Especially since I kicked ass at CIM, due in part to the VO2 workouts.

I'm really excited about our trail run tonight, and I'm looking forward to the long run this coming weekend. Oh man, those cinnamon rolls... words can't describe...

St. Patrick's Day Run and Week 5 Summary

Saturday 17.0 miles/2:30:19/8:50 average pace

All week I put off planning a route for Saturday's run- 17 is an odd distance and doesn't coordinate well with most my routes. Plus, Zach wanted to run some of it with me which requires even more complex route-planning... so I just ignored the problem. Not surprisingly, that lead to a stressful morning. I am awful at making spontaneous decisions, and the more I delayed, the later it got, the warmer it got, and the more stressed I got... it was a bad cycle. Finally I put my shoes on and decided we'd just run from home. I've got a good (though kinda hilly, half pavement-only, and totally exposed and hot) 12 mile loop from my house, and I planned on adding a brutally familiar 5 miles at the end. I get a huge portion of my motivation on long runs from changing scenery. So, this is pretty far from ideal.

Well, it turned out great! It was quite warm, and having to run BY my house with 5 miles to go was pretty tough, but I handled it well. Rather than being excited about the landscape, I was held over with satisfaction with my pace. I kinda wanted this to be partially a Marathon Pace run, so I'm glad I pulled that off.

The first 7 miles were gradual climbs, followed by a huge downhill in mile 8 (good Boston training!), then flat the rest of the way.

1- 9:31
2- 9:11
3- 9:02
4- 9:06
5- 9:00
6- 9:01
7- 9:20 (First 7 miles- 1:04:13 [9:10 average pace])
8- 8:41
9- 8:37
10- 8:38
11- 8:43
12- 8:38
13- 8:48
14- 8:48
15- 8:32
16- 8:32
17- 8:01 (Last 10 miles- 1:26:06 [8:37 average pace])

Zach did 12 miles with me- a distance record for him! He's doing so good. :) Although next weekend I am planning on running my 20 miler alone. It would be a little hard to include his shorter distance into the run, due to the location and the route and all that. But also I will use the alone time to really focus and get pumped for Boston, which is coming up soooooon. While I'm out doing that, he's going to try his own solo long run... that will be a first for him.

After the run, an ice bath, a long shower, and a huge lunch, we joined in some St. Patrick's Day festivities with our friends in the afternoon. That resulted in a very early bedtime. :D

Yesterday I woke up very excited.... the local St. Patrick's Day 5k Fun Run has a new route which went RIGHT by my house!!! It was so fun to watch. I stood on my balcony and cheered all the runners for about a half hour. It was cool to see the first speedy men, then the leading ladies, then the rest of the pack came huffing and puffing... then lots of walkers and strollers and little kids. It's a quiet residential area, so they didn't have any crowd support besides me! Everyone was in need of some cheering at that point (a little over a mile to go) so cheer I did. Lots of people waved and said "thank you!" and I know the others thought it. :) It was really fun. I wished I could have been out there too (I've done the race before) but I enjoyed my job as cheerleader.

After that excitement, we went to the gym for a short lift (Zach's got us on a 3-day split thing, so we had to. I tried to get out of it!) and swimming. I swam 25 laps = 1250 meters in about 45 minutes. That's a swimming distance record for me! :) I felt great and had a blast. Zach timed me on one lap, and I went all out. I swam 50 meters in 54 seconds! Yahoo!

It was a big week for me and I'm feeling super.

TOTAL miles for week 5: 41.25 miles!

PLUS: 3 x upper body weights, 1 light lower body weight session, and 3 x swimming for a total of 3100 meters!

Mid-Week Long Run and Friday Swim

Thursday 11.0 miles/1:37:26/8:52 average pace

It was really warm - upper 70's- so the first few miles kind of sucked. I was very thirsty and drank lots of water, but I still felt sluggish. After a while, I got some shade, my legs loosened up, and I started feeling a lot better. By the last few miles I was feeling great. The usual routine I guess.

1- 8:54
2- 8:52
3- 9:09
4- 9:00
5- 8:55
6- 9:05
7- 9:04
8- 8:53
9- 8:57
10- 8:40
11- 7:52

I finished the run at the gym, where I met Zach for some upper body weights. We did biceps and back, plus core.

This morning I got up and went to the gym for a swim. I love my Friday swim! I've done it 3 times in a row. :) It's a great way to start a Friday. Plus, it's supposed to be a rest day, so there's no pressure to work hard. Today I swam 15 laps = 750 meters in about 25 minutes. There was a chatty guy in the next lane who was bragging about his fast swimming (he was fast!) which was kinda funny. On my very last length I tried to keep pace with him, and I did but it about killed me. :D I sat in the steam room for a while then got ready for work.

It's a beautiful day here in the the bay area- sunny and 80's by this afternoon. Yay Friday.

Back in the Pool

I haven't been in the pool since last Friday, although it seems longer than that. It took me a little bit to warm up and get into a rhythm, but I started feeling good and had a lot of fun.

I swam 22 laps = 1100 meters in 40 minutes. I did 20 laps of freestyle (?/crawl) in 35 minutes, but then I did a lap of breast stroke and then a length of backstroke and a length of breaststroke. I really don't know what I"m doing when it comes to those other strokes, but I had to be close, and it was fun. The breaststroke was a tough arm workout. Maybe I'll look up about the breast/back stroke technique so I can start doing that more. I liked the variety!

Sunny Tempo Run

Tuesday 7.25 miles/58:13/8:02 average pace

(pretty random eh?)

I really struggled through the first half of this run - it was hot, my legs were sore, and I was running through a neighborhood with so many street crossings that I couldn't get into a rhythm. The turnaround point was at a park, so I grabbed a drink (ahhh) and it was really the "turning point" in the run. On the way back, I hit all the green lights, the sun was behind my back, and my legs felt loose. So, all in all, it was a great run. I didn't do the structured 7 miles with 4 at LT pace, but it worked out.

1- 8:16
2- 8:11
3- 8:15
4- 8:08
5- 8:00
6- 7:54
7- 7:39
.25- 1:48 (7:12 pace)

Right after the run, Zach and I headed up to the gym for upper body weights plus abs/core. We have a new routine, so yesterday we just did chest and shoulders.

We made it home in time to see the last two periods of the Sharks game. They destroyed Chicago 7-1.

Side note, my throat is feeling a lot better! Finally.

Spring is here!

Monday 6.0 miles/54:21/9:04 average pace

It really felt like Spring out last night! I waited for Zach to get home from work, and when we started our run at about 6:30 it was still sunny and stayed light the whole run! It was nice and warm (about 75), the flowers were super fragrant, and everyone seemed to be bbq-ing outside. It was quite the sensory experience.

We also ran up a big ass hill, which was fun. Zach is a good hill runner! The pace was comfortable the first 5 miles, then we pushed it and ran a 7:58 final mile. Great run. :)

Before the run I did a short core/legs workout at home. Nothing major but it was something.

Tiburon revisited

Saturday 18.0 miles/2:42:10/9:01 average pace

I ran the Paradise Loop around the Tiburon Peninsula, which is just across the Golden Gate Bridge from SF. It's an 8.5 mile hilly loop so I did it twice- the first loop (plus some) with Zach, and the second loop solo. It was incredible! The weather was perfect (sunny and about 65) with gorgeous views. The road is hilly, but I was expecting them this time. I have only run the course once before- last October while training for CIM- and it kicked my ass. Yesterday I found it to be pretty hard, but not bad. I couldn't believe when I looked back in my log (link here) that I ran faster yesterday! So, I guess that means I am back in shape.

Zach ran the first 10 miles with me, then a final mile by himself! I was really proud of him for taking on that last mile alone. I think he got a glimpse of the mental side of distance-running. And I think he liked it. :)

Loop One
9:16
9:07
9:32
9:10
9:01
8:46
9:05
8:54
8:57 (First 9 miles in 1:21:52 [9:06 average pace])

Loop Two
9:19
9:16
9:35
9:18
8:53
8:54
8:34
8:28
8:04 (Last 9 miles in 1:20:18 [8:55 average pace])

I am not swimming today, since I've had a pretty sore throat all week (again). I need some rest. And since I took it pretty easy this week swimming and weights-wise, I need to git r done next week for sure. I'm off to the couch and Season 3 of Family Guy.

TOTAL miles for the week: 41

PLUS: not much... um... 2 times swimming for a total of 1000 meters. No weights.

Tuesday & Thursday

Tuesday 7.0 miles/1:00:48/8:41 average pace

I actually enjoyed the speed work in this run! The quarter-mile intervals were short enough that I never got too tired, and never got that "I'm-gonna-puke" feeling that often accompanies intervals. It felt great to run the repeats hard, knowing they'd be over in a snap. I was a little conservative at first, knowing I had 10 repeats to do. I did 1:1 speed and recovery intervals (.25 mile each). I warmed up with a mile at 9:08 pace, then ran the intervals in the following times (I'm omitting my recovery times):

1- 1:49
2- ? didn't hit the lap between speed and recovery intervals
3- 1:50
4- 1:47
5- 1:51 (slowest one: 7:24 pace)
6- 1:43
7- 1:48
8- 1:44
9- 1:46
10- 1:42 (fastest one: 6:48 pace)

Nice and consistent! I got a side cramp on that last one, but otherwise felt great. I did one mile cool down in 8:51 to finish up.

I took Wednesday off since I was in OC for work. Back at it this morning:

Thursday 10.0 miles/1:33:44/9:23 average pace

I was tired and thirsty, but enjoyed this morning's run anyway. It was so pretty - sun shining, blue sky, flowers blossoming, birds singing, it was impossible to not like. I ran a little slow due to being generally tired, really thirsty (should have brought my fuel belt), and I've got a sore throat thing again I think. But I made it through, chugged a ton of water, and feel fine now. These longer mid-week runs are great endurance and confidence builders. I'm glad I have 5 1/2 weeks before Boston, since I am finally feeling like my self again when running. The marathon might not be so bad after all. :)

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Week 6 Schedule (and Monday's workout)

6 weeks to Boston!!

Monday: 6 miles easy (+ short swim)

Tuesday: 7 miles intervals: 10 X .25 mile with .25 mile recoveries, plus one mile warm up and one mile cool down

Wednesday: off- travelling for work

Thursday: 10 miles GA (+ upper body weights)

Friday: (morning swim?)

Saturday: 18 miles

Sunday: (swim)

total miles scheduled: 41

------------------------------------------------------

Monday 6.0 miles/57:32/9:35 average pace

I ran on the Treadmill at the gym. Pretty boring. Then I stretched and showered and jumped in the pool for a short swim. I did 10 laps (500 m) in 15 minutes. I concentrated on keeping the pace easy and relaxed so that I could just touch the end and come back. I think I'm resting a lot because I"m so out of breath, so this method made it easier to take short rests. I did maybe 2 or 3 where I just touched the end and swam back, and the rest were still pretty short rests. :)

Long run and week 7 Summary

Saturday 16.0 miles/2:27:23/9:13 average pace

I was joined once again by Zach, and together we ran my favorite 10 mile loop in Walnut Creek. This was the first 10 miler I ever did, and I still run it often, so it's a special place for me and it was cool to share it with Zach. :) After the loop, I did an out-and-back alone for a total of 16 miles.

1- 9:22
2- 9:03
3- 9:15
4- 9:29
5- 9:16
6- 9:36
7- 9:33
8- 9:38 (1st half split- 1:15:16 [9:25 average pace])
9- 9:12
10- 9:01
11- 9:04
12- 9:03
13- 9:13
14- 8:55
15- 8:51
16- 8:45 (2nd half split- 1:12:07 [9:01 pace])

I felt really good the entire time, although it did get kind of warm by the end. But my legs felt good, my breathing felt good, everything was smooth. No complaints. :)

Sunday we got up and went to the pool, where I swam 20 laps (1000 m) in 35 minutes. I felt great in the pool. My resting times are getting shorter, and the swimming feels easier. Still hard, and I definitely still choke on water pretty regularly, but it's really getting better. Zach is really good, so my goal is to keep up with him. Or try to, anyway.

SO....

TOTAL miles for Week 7: 36!

PLUS: 2 upper body weights sessions, 2 lower body/core strength sessions (really short, but that's ok) and 3x swimming for a total of 2750 meters.

Finally some outdoor running, plus weights and a bonus swim

Thursday 8.0 miles/1:10:06/8:46 average pace

I ran after work in the great outdoors! It was cool- about 50- but only a few clouds which made for a beautiful sunset.

The scheduled said "Marathon Pace" but I admit I've been kind of ignoring that order. I don't really have a marathon pace set, so the run is basically a General Aerobic run, which to me means "however I feel." Turns out, I felt really good! I didn't run particularly fast, but I was consistant, and the pace felt EASY. Easy!!! Hooray!

1- 8:58
2- 8:49
3- 8:51
4- 9:03
5- 8:54
6- 8:54
7- 8:33
8- 8:00

While I ran, I listened to a podcast called Get Your Geek On which was about triathlons, and this particular episode was for Newbie triathletes. I got a lot of good info! I'm going to check out a few other triathlon podcasts too, but this one was pretty entertaining.

I finished my run up at the gym, where Zach was waiting for me, and we hit the weight room for about an hour of upper body weights. It was fun, I felt strong. I think it was a benifit to start the workout right away, as opposed to Tuesday where I had about 20+ minutes between finishing the run and getting to the gym. That's just enough time for the energy to drain from my body.

I went to bed pretty early last night and was motivated to get to the gym this morning for a bonus swim. :) I've been wanting to check out the morning pool scene, but like I suspected, swimmers are an early-bird kind of group and the pool was packed. I had no problem sharing a lane though and had a great swim. I did 15 laps = 750 m in 25 minutes and felt great. :) I've swum 2750 meters this week! Did I use swum correctly?

This weekend will include: 16 mile long run (partially with Zach), swimming, a night out at the Bubble Lounge for my friend's birthday, and some shopping. Just about perfect.

Swimming and February Summary

Wednesday I swam 20 laps - 1000 m - in 35 minutes. Previously 20 laps took me at least 40 minutes, but I think my resting time is decreasing. I felt really comfortable and relaxed and my breathing felt good. I timed myself down and back once and it took one minute. :) I thought I'd record that so I can check again in a few weeks. Swimming is so fun. I know I'll hit a plateau eventually, but right now it's so cool to see the improvement every time. The first time I went swimming- not just kicking only, but when Zach taught me how to breathe and I actually swam a little- was January 28, so a month ago.

That same weekend I did the 5 mile run that I called a "long" run because it wasn't just about testing my knee, but actually running. I was officially healed and decided that week to go ahead with Boston. This was a MONTH ago. I can't believe how far I have come in just a month. :)

Total miles in February: 110.5
